about

Live solo violin set recorded at Soup, Toyko in 2012. Jamie and Kelly were chopping furiously for hours the night before. What started as an extended layover on the way home from visiting my centenarian maternal grandmother in Taiwan. A sub-sub basement, below a laundry room that’s below an apartment building: now that’s what you call an underground. Raw food. How many negi do I watch Kelly turn into mince? He’s telling me about the diet he’s on and all the other ones he’s tried in the last year. I get to the gig late because I was at Superdeluxe. I caught HELLL (when you run out of frets you can stop a string by pinching it between two fingers and Asuna’s party popper made the perfect ending) but left while two Americans were mid-squiggle. Coconut oil and dates, powdered chocolate maybe, it has to freeze to set. L.A. promises but no remission. This is more of a party than a show. Living food has a strange opulence in this subterranean light. That time Akiyama and I made it at Soup (he suggested “Cold”ˆ because he already had one called: “Hot Ginger”). I met a qui. In between there’s the Tōhoku earthquake. Fukushima. I make friends again, a year later. It’s sushi but everything is vegetable. Lettuce wraps red, orange, brown, wet. Salt. Pomegranates. A week earlier, on tour with Mukaiº, every club has a Roland JC120 and a Fender Twin. This time I get the Twin. It’s a good night. Kelly doesn’t live another two years, dies a week before my grandmother. I haven’t played music in Japan since but I'm on the road with Mukai, a qui and Tori Kudo in the states later that year, get to play bass in Ché-Shizu˘, and am in the “wedding band” at Cal* and Jamie’s, things just keep on keeping on.

°Mukai and I’s first meeting was released as the LP “2.23.11” and I hope to share some recordings from our 2012 tour in the not too distant future.
