about
First release from this duo of Tokyo-based guitarist, Tetuzi Akiyama, and New York's Che Chen. Akiyama is in rare "Don't Forget to Boogie" form here; his heavily distorted, locomotive guitar lines chugging away as Chen's electrified fiddle drones, screeches and scrapes. Sine wave generators and a modified tape delay round out the mix. Sidelong live track on one side, studio jams on the flip. Released on Jozef Van Wissem's Incunabulum Records.
Description from Volcanic Tongue:
"Edition of 350 copies duo jams from Japanese guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama and violinist Che Chen: Cold Soup is billed as the follow-up to Akiyama’s legendary Don’t Forget To Boogie and he’s on classic electric meta-groove form here, swapping psychedelic Canned Heat-isms for pure Tokyo raunch. Chen saws through his fiddle like no one this side of Ornette Coleman circa Town Hall ’62, until the whole deal comes across like some unholy basement Cale/Reed set up that would marry The Primitives and The Falling Spikes with a stomping/wincing R&B mainline to “Black Angel’s Death Song”. Indeed, this one tops even Don’t Forget To Boogie in terms of bloody-minded minimalist excess, with Akiyama repeat jamming one eternal chord while Chen drools almost Ayler-ised melodies all over the top. Phenomenal!"
